Ends Dec 16, 2018
Materials such as aluminum, epoxy, and human hair used in Karen Lofgren's immersive installation reference ancient healing rituals such as “pulling through” and magical transference. She examines representations of the plant world, looking at the roots of botany and medicinal history and proposes a horizontalization of structures of knowledge. From a decolonial and feminist perspective, Lofgren dissects the history of power and oppressed knowledge through the lens of cultural and other wild systems. The artist’s most recent body of work builds upon a nine-month residence in the Amazon rainforest in Northern Peru followed by a six-month period of studying the history of ritual and belief in ancient medicine as a Fulbright Core Scholar in London.
