We often think of “play” as standing in opposition to reality. A play-space is one that exists beyond truth and allows for the inhabitant to map out alternate realities without repercussion. This practice can have uplifting results, think of a child tinkering with an interactive science exhibit or a free draw exercise meant to spur creativity. But the excuse of “just playing around” is also often used to mask bad behavior. A condescending jab or “locker room talk” become acts of levity.
When we allow ourselves to play, to let our bodies and minds run amok, we also multiply our potential outcomes and, invariably, our potential consequences. The true ruse is that a play-space isn’t fiction at all; it allows us to occupy our most honest truths without inhibition. The works in Give Plaza are each their own negotiation of what it means to exist within a play-space, to re-imagine the worlds around and within us.
