JAUS is delighted to present the solo show "Captain Rooftop" by artist Julie Orser. This exhibition will most likely, probably be the last brick-and-mortar exhibition for JAUS in its current manifestation. JAUS Director Ichiro Irie will continue nomadic and online activities as an independent curator, as JAUS, and as a member of the curatorial collective QiPO. Set in downtown Los Angeles, Orser’s video installation "Captain Rooftop" explores the artifice of Hollywood cinema and an archetypal male character it perpetuates. The video’s camerawork and sound design take an absurd feminist approach against traditional seamless cinema as a stereotypical masculine character repeatedly fails to stay onboard his landlocked ship. As the video loops it becomes clear his actions are futile, a ridiculous performance for a role in which he has been cast. Although first shot in 2017, the scrambling actions of the inept, and possibly inebriated, captain are remarkably prescient in light of recent revelations about other non-fictitious men in positions of power. BIOGRAPHY Julie Orser (b. Chicago) received her MFA in Studio Art from California Institute of the Arts and a BFA in Photography at Pacific Northwest College of Art. Her videos, photography, and multi-channel installations have exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Luckman Gallery (Los Angeles), Changing Role Gallery (Rome), Shoshana Wayne Gallery (Santa Monica), Christopher Grimes Gallery (Santa Monica), Steve Turner Contemporary (Los Angeles), Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin), Utah Museum of Contemporary Art (Salt Lake City), Il Magazzino d'Arte Moderna (Rome), Kunstraum Innsbruck (Austria), The Gallery Loop (Seoul), Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco), Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, The Armory Center for the Arts (Pasadena), Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art, the Ann Arbor Film Festival, Saison Vidéo and Dallas Video Festival. Orser was awarded the 2010 California Community Foundation Visual Artist Fellowship for Emerging Artists, the 2014 and 2009 Investing in Artists grants from the Center for Cultural Innovation, and the 2014 ARC grant. Julie is an Associate Professor in the Creative Photography and Experimental Media Program at California State University, Fullerton. She lives and works in Los Angeles.
