Ends Jan 5, 2019
Join Katya Grokhovsky and artist and curator Margarethe Drexel in conversation about Nothing Personal, Katya's solo exhibition of painting, drawing, sculpture, and video at LAST Projects through Jan 5th. LAST Projects is pleased to announce Nothing Personal, an exhibition by NYC based multidisciplinary artist Katya Grokhovsky, which explores the construct of femininity, gender and identity through sculpture, video, painting and performance. Revolving around various fictional personas and their belongings, costumes and habitats, Nothing Personal highlights the absurdity and generalization of stereotypes, assumptions and prejudice in our current political climate. Utilizing found and bought consumer goods and materials, juxtaposing them with paint, paper, toys, clothing and performative gestures, live and for video, Grokhovsky‘s works occupy the liminal space between kitsch and grotesque, examining power and labor hierarchies. Subverting the male gaze through humor, the exhibition underscores the persistence of patriarchal control of the female identified body, lifestyle choices, appearance, health and sexuality. Katya Grokhovsky was born in Ukraine, raised in Australia and is based in NYC. She is an artist, curator, educator and a Founding Director of The Immigrant Artist Biennial (TIAB) and Feminist Urgent (FU). Grokhovsky holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, a BFA from Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne University, Australia and a BA (Honors) in Fashion from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia. Grokhovsky has received support through numerous residencies and fellowships including The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) Studios Program, NYC, BRICworkspace Residency, NYC, Ox-BOW School of Art Residency, MI, Wassaic Artist Residency, NY, Atlantic Center for the Arts, FL, Studios at MASS MoCA, MA, SOHO20 Gallery Residency, NYC, BRIC Media Arts Fellowship, NYC, VOX Populi AUX Curatorial Fellowship, PA, NARS (New York Residency and Studio Foundation), NYC, Santa Fe Art Institute Residency, NM, Watermill Center Residency, NY and more.
