From a body of work aimed not at conclusion but questioning and doubt, Story’s End No. 1 // Continúa el Cuento Nº. 1 is a performative installation mobilizing (or not) sculpture, architecture, and surveillance. Live performances, video, photography, mixed media, words and balls articulate the confines, challenges, and phenomena of días cotidianos, to author a story that may have been best left alone. Carolina Maki Kitagawa (b. 1982) uses performance, sculpture, video, and mixed media to investigate visual markers of display and storytelling. Fluent in Spanish and half-fluent in Japanese, her practice is informed by language play, the process of translation, and varied interpretations of history between the two locations where she works – Los Angeles and Mexico. Kitagawa has been supported through a grant from The Confluence Center for Creative Inquiry at the University of Arizona (2016), and residencies at Anderson Ranch Art Center and Ox Bow School of Art (both in 2018).
