Snooze brings together a collection of over two dozen of Farrag’s recent ceramic works. Flowers and phalluses ooze and undulate from the an assortment of vessels, figurative sculptures, and glazed paintings. On first glance, Farrag’s work is innocent and uplifting. The stoneware is thrown together with a determined sloppiness that underpins the artist’s playful attitude. But the more time you spend in this garden, the more its darkness is revealed. Bodach, a squatted devilish trickster, lurks in the corner of the gallery and glares out over the space. It’s always hot on my side of town, a speckled sun that shares Bodach’s menacing grin, is perched high above the rest of the exhibition and casts its own freakish gaze over the work. These two pieces, much like the rest of the work in Snooze, find a sweet spot where manic meets whimsy.
