snipe1 is no longer able to enter the United States. After 20 years of being banned, he has found a new way to be a present force in the US. Avenue des Arts is proud to present METAZEALOT, snipe1’s first solo exhibition in the US. snipe1 sees himself as a zealous person, and uses this series of works to call upon others like him to push the limit and show up to an exhibit that he, himself, cannot attend. Using only spray paint for all of his pieces, snipe1 combines his style of graffiti, anime, and traditional Japanese painting from the Edo period. Some of his pieces depict Graffiti Yokai, or strange apparitions, lurking about and tagging trains and streets—fusing traditional Japanese folklore with the realities of modern graffiti artists. He also contrasts his grunge spray methods with cute Japanese characters and vibrant colors. Although graffiti is rebellious in nature, snipe1 has found a loophole to spread his graffiti philosophies. The sheer precense of these 15 paintings are challenging the authorities that barred snipe1 from reentering the United States.
