Amy Sherald: The Great American Fact
901 East 3rd St. Los Angeles, CA 90013
Saturday, March 20 at 11:00 AM 6:00 PM
Ends Jun 6, 2021
Beginning 20 March, Amy Sherald, one of America’s defining contemporary portraitists, will unveil five new paintings in her first West Coast solo exhibition. On view through 6 June at Hauser & Wirth’s Downtown Los Angeles Arts District complex, ‘The Great American Fact’ expands Sherald’s effort to, as the artist states, ‘paint the things I wish to see’ by depicting Black Americans in scenes of leisure and centered in stillness. With these new group portraits and paintings of individuals, Sherald builds upon techniques she employed in her iconic portraits of former First Lady Michelle Obama and Breonna Taylor for Vanity Fair. Through her distinctive use of portraiture and by challenging accepted notions of American identity, Sherald attempts to restore a broader, fuller picture of humanity. Visitor Guidelines: ‘Amy Sherald. The Great American Fact’ is open at limited capacity Tuesday through Sunday, 11 am – 6 pm. Free entry. No booking necessary. For updates on entry wait time, follow the standby line Twitter account. Also on view by request will be a Book & Printed Matter Lab presentation dedicated to California-based artist Richard Jackson, ‘Richard Jackson: Works with Books.’ COVID-19 Updates: The gallery is open at reduced capacity and all viewings will adhere to LA County Public Health protocols, including limiting one household into the gallery per timed viewing appointment during the week, designated routes through exhibitions, hand sanitizer stations, and digitized exhibition materials. Masks are mandatory. The courtyard and garden will be closed until further notice.
