CALL FOR ARTISTS In the Paint is an organizational initiative stemming from the Lakers 6-point Racial Equity Action Plan. As an LA-based basketball organization, we fused the worlds of sports and culture 60+ years ago. Now we’re strengthening this connection even more by recognizing, supporting, and uplifting our local community of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) artists. In partnership with the Lakers, this competitive art program will be instituted by world-renowned fine artist Charly Palmer and a panel of three judges, who will select 15 local artists of color as Contributing Artists to create works of art to be exhibited at the inaugural 2022 In the Paint art exhibition at the Los Angeles Lakers’ UCLA Health Training Center. The proceeds will benefit the Contributing Artists and support the growth and development of In the Paint initiatives. Furthermore, Charly and accompanying panelists will select 10 local artists to receive grants supporting their development as artists and mentorship opportunities with Charly. Overall, this dynamic program will change the trajectory of 25 LA-based BIPOC artists’ careers in 2022. --- 15 In the Paint Contributing Partners 15 artists will be chosen by our panelists as Contributing Artists to exhibit their work at the 2022 inaugural In the Paint art exhibition. Those Contributing Artists will have the opportunity to display and sell their work at the 2022 exhibition. Up to 3 works selected by Lakers players will be purchased by the Lakers at the 2022 exhibition. All of the artwork exhibited at the 2022 exhibition will receive unique exposure at the exhibition itself, as well as through an accompanying online exhibition and on Lakers' digital and social platforms. Artwork purchased by the Lakers may also receive exposure on display at the UCLA Health Training Center. --- 10 In the Paint Grantees In the Paint is looking to expand artistic opportunities for 10 up-and-coming BIPOC artists. In the Paint Grantees will receive mentorship opportunities with Charly Palmer, including artistic support and skill enhancement workshops throughout the year. Each Grantee will also receive a $10,000 grant to elevate their artistic endeavors. --- Eligibility: The contest period is 12:00 p.m. PT on 7/12/21 – 11:59 p.m. PT on 7/31/21.
