Dries Van Noten and Half Gallery are honored to present the work of Rene Ricard in How to break into the underground movies at The Little House, 451 N. La Cienega Blvd., in Los Angeles. Available to the public January 21st until February 12th. The exhibition, entitled Nightcrawlers, marks the first posthumous show of Rene Ricard’s work in Los Angeles since his passing six years ago. The artist occupied a strange liminal wedge where art and cinema intersect, having appeared in multiple short films by Andy Warhol, some No Wave cinema, and most famously portrayed by Michael Wincott in Julian Schnabel’s Basquiat (for which Rene coincidentally wrote the voiceover). Originally titled How to break into the underground movies, after the same one-liner Rene once planned to name his memoir, we choose to highlight the single painting in this presentation that has not been seen publicly since its debut in 1990. Doomed escapism, tragic romance, wit in the face of absurdity: we witness Rene firing on all cylinders here. The show includes paintings with text over thrift store finds (But you love me...you said so, Enlightenment) while others are the artist’s from whole cloth (Please hold me the forgotten way).
