Opening October 23, the Fowler Museum at UCLA presents 'Art, Honor, and Ridicule: Fante Asafo Flags from Southern Ghana,' featuring 46 graphic flags from the Fowler’s collection, the largest public repository of asafo flags in the country. Colorful and conceptually layered, the flags are adorned with vivid appliqué images that convey narratives of pride and superiority, visualize proverbial wisdom, and send defiant messages to enemies. They are produced by the historical and still thriving Fante militia companies (or asafo), and come alive in spectacular cultural events that celebrate and preserve the memory of the companies’ role as community defendants.
