STEPHANIE SHERWOOD: ill-contained
6201 Winnetka Ave. Woodland Hills, California 91371
Sunday, November 13 at 1:00 PM 3:00 PM
Ends Dec 12, 2022
Pierce College Art Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Stephanie Sherwood. Featuring work from the artist’s “Confine Series” and “In Situ” practice, this most recent adventure highlights the artist’s expansive handling of materials and methods. Launching beyond her traditional roots of 2D painting and drawing, the artist has taken to the streets (and alleyways) to surreptitiously paint her signature imagery on derelict furniture where it stands. After documenting the ephemeral results, the cast-off objects eventually make their way to their intended destination, the landfill. In a site-specific installation, Sherwood brings her nomadic impulses to the white box: lush and suggestive forms, simultaneously deliberate and random, a marriage of urban detritus and performative spontaneity. A long-time resident of Los Angeles with a multi-cultural background, Sherwood graduated from California State University, Long Beach, and studied at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in China in 2010-11. She has shown at Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, LA Artcore, The Brand Library, DAC Gallery and Highways Performance Space as well as nationally and internationally. Sherwood will give a gallery talk in the gallery November 7th at noon. A reception will be held on Sunday, November 13th from 1:00-3:00 PM. All gallery events are free and open to the public, as is parking in nearby Lot 6 West. For current gallery hours and accessibility questions, call 818-710-2908 or 818-710-4345.
