Eleanor Swordy: Compartmentalizing | Christopher Richmond: Moiré

Ends Feb 4, 2023
Across eight works on paper and a single painting, Eleanor Swordy’s subjects contend with a dirty kitchen appliance, plumb briny depths, sink haplessly into the earth, and delight in the finding of a lone snail in the rain. Stunning technical riffs that dot her works point towards the artist’s pursuit, reveling in moments of minor grandeur that often go unnoticed. __ Using filmic narrative structures and conventions of portraiture as raw materials, Christopher Richmond subverts, stretches, and plays with both in his new photographs and works on paper. Constantly involving the studio as both a physical and notional entity, the works in Moiré constitute records of the artist’s activity, winking ripostes to heroic notions of art stars and movie idols, and critiques of those societal forces that require linear stories and neat characterizations.
