The origin of abstract painting is often traced back to the early 20th century and the work of white male artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Jackson Pollock, and many others. The history of abstraction often overlooks the contributions of artists from diverse backgrounds despite the significant role they played in shaping the development of abstraction as both an aesthetic quality and a sociopolitical tool. coagulated senses brings together a group of artists that reject traditional ideas of representation in order to reveal the world around them through various materials and forms. Edwin Arzeta, TJ Bohm, Adrian Culverson, Hea-Mi Kim, and Zori Swanegan combine materials such as acrylic flowers, textiles, with traditional mediums such as oil paint to explore the complexities of representation. They remind us that abstraction is not bound to race, gender, or cultural background; but rather a psychological space where fleeting emotions and memory come to life through intimate decision-making processes. psla.xyz
