Join us for an Open House Reception of "Clinton Hill: 50 Years of Color & Line" and Ken Lum: Time. And Again. on Saturday, February 18, 2023 from 12-5pm. "Clinton Hill: 50 Years of Color & Line" is a survey of the artist's significant career stretching from the 1950s to his death in 2003. Hill had a profound and lifelong interest in abstraction exploring the psychological impact of gender and sexuality through color and form. The works included in this exhibition bridge the gap from a time before the gay liberation movement when Hill’s practice employed covert investigations to a time of more open dialogue as he disclosed his sexual orientation with others. Although embodying a variety of styles, his paintings, mixed-media works on paper, and assemblages, are woven together through the thread of harmonious palettes and lyricism of line. "Time. And Again." features Lum’s acclaimed image-text format exploring issues around our contemporary existence and how it is defined by the anxiety and stress around work and labor using the pandemic as a starting point. The people portrayed in these new works are representative of what he recognizes as “persons who are inheritors of the contradictory and too often pernicious effects of modernity. The contemporaneity they find themselves in is often oppressive and the characters have to struggle against it, often feebly.”
