Night Contains Multitudes

This exhibition explores the vast range of responses to the night by artists across time and place. In the hands of such artists as Ansel Adams, Leonard Freed, Ed Ruscha, June Wayne, Carrie Mae Weems, and James McNeill Whistler, the night is many things: a romantic attraction, a natural phenomenon, a historic construction, a time for inner reflection, an opportunity for debauchery, a torture for insomniacs. Night can be restful or restless, inspirational or fearful, personal or collective. This exhibition features work by more than 50 artists—primarily from the Benton’s collection—who engage with the night as its own subject, arranged in the gallery from representations of sunset through the darkest hours just before dawn.
