Justin Lui: Liquid Light
338 South Avenue 16, Los Angeles, CA 90031
Saturday, June 3 at 5:00 PM 9:00 PM
Ends Jun 11, 2023
Liquid Light presents a collection of interactive installation pieces and light sculptures by artist Justin Lui, which together transform the Keystone gallery into a darkened space illuminated by flowing fields of light. Lui’s artwork explores the intersections between media technology and architecture in order to create objects, spaces, and surfaces which are dynamic and intelligent. His first-ever solo exhibit Liquid Light will present several experiential pieces that engage the senses at a bodily scale. These artworks spring from explorations with fiber-optics, LEDs, space, light, coding, as well as more prosaic materials like disposable single-use plastic, and card stock. These materials and mediums are synthesized by processes of ‘making’ that range from 3D modeling and digital fabrication, to programming, to hand crafting and manual assembly. The exhibition will include Animate Field; a room-sized mass of fiber-optic filaments that glow as a cloud of light points, which dynamically change color when participants physically enter and move through it. As they wade through the thicket of filaments, Animate Field dynamically creates trails of yellow light, which gradually fade behind them as ghostly reminders of their presence. Liquid Light will include a custom musical soundtrack created by artist and musical technologist Estevan Carlos. The opening reception for Liquid Light will take place on Saturday June 3, 2023 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm, with the show running through June 11, 2023. Instagram: @justinlui @keystoneartla
