Framed by a histories worth of representations, the black artist as cultural producer and subject, finds oneself in a fragmented world. Affixed with a perspective doubled by the effects of being misidentified, and conscious to the apparatuses which construct this reality, such as the manufactured and embedded contradictory meanings of the colors black and white. Lorenzo Baker and Tyrone Green (artist and felon) present “i’m just playin” an exhibition entrenched in the politicized black body’s ability to play. Making his Los Angeles debut, Tyrone Green, represented by the Félix Sloan Duchamp gallery in New York, offers his thoughts on the limitations of the black body: “their situation is such…”â €Pushing up against systems of authority which perpetuate the limitation of normalcy and collapsing objects, images, text and space, Tyrone and Lorenzo highlight the ubiquitous façade of separation sandwiched between the social and political spheres of pop culture. Due to play’s ability to subvert the conforming constraints of our often described black and white world, Baker and Green are concerned with expanding upon the realms of possibility, which when applied to the black body, offer pathways to liberation.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
