Opening Night: Saturday, February 23, 7-11pm on view through March 9 Gabba Gallery is thrilled to present four solo shows by local artists Anyes Galleani, Kate Carvellas, Patrick Haemmerlein, and Henry Niller. Curated by Jason Ostro and Elena Jacobson. Anyes Galleani celebrates the intersection of fierce and feminine with Strong, a striking new collection of mixed media works depicting beautiful women. Abstracted female forms move the viewer alongside refreshing portraits of female icons of past and present (Marilyn Monroe, Amy Winehouse, Angelina Jolie). Using photo montage, paste, paint, and other media, Galleani highlights the complexity of our modern notion of woman: simple yet layered; soft yet bold; delicate yet strong. In her upcoming exhibition, Time, Space, and Place, artist Kate Carvellas challenges the viewer to see ordinary objects as extraordinary. Her assemblage approach incorporates vintage items collected from thrift stores and flea markets. Carvellas deliberately avoids randomness, being intentional with her compositions and sometimes taking weeks to find the “right thing” to be placed. When discussing her work, Carvellas refers to a quote by philosopher Edward Casey: “Time and space come together in place, resulting in change that celebrates or disrupts cyclical time and leads to rituals that recreate the universe.” Patrick Haemmerlein continues to delight viewers with Measuring Memories, his second solo exhibition at Gabba. His unmistakable mixed media panels juxtapose evocative, watercolor images of California (a surfer cutting back on a wave or a coyote thriving mid-city) with monochromatic collages of sheet music and other literature. At times in this show Haemmerlein also diverges from this signature style with works that explore Native American symbols as they relate to photographs of animals. Henry Niller presents Anomalies, an exhibition of work spanning two years and a wide range of styles. A large collection of drawings in pen and ink on paper showcase the arc of Niller’s recent development as an artist. Several larger, more detailed mixed media works build upon concepts and approaches explored in these drawings. Niller also shares a comprehensive collection of his beloved “Rockers” series in which he cheekily re-imagines legendary artists and bands (Kiss, the Ramones, Phish) as delightful and lovable skeletons printed atop vibrant backgrounds. All four shows open February 23 and will be on view through March 9. The opening night reception takes place Saturday, February 23 from 7-11pm. The event is free and open to the public.
