This month’s Family Studio Workshop is inspired by the exhibition, ‘Piero Manzoni. Materials of His Time’, on view in Hauser & Wirth’s South gallery. Renowned Italian artist Piero Manzoni emerged as a powerful voice for the avant-garde in the 1950s by employing materials in his work that were not typically associated with traditional sculpture or painting, such as fur, straw, and bread rolls. Channelling Manzoni’s practice, workshop participants will create their own conceptual Texture Boxes using ready-made materials including sandpaper, air drying clay, cotton balls, and more. The workshop will be led by Matt MacFarland. About ‘Piero Manzoni. Materials of His Time’ ‘Piero Manzoni. Materials of His Time’ is the first exhibition with the gallery and the first in Los Angeles in over 20 years devoted to the seminal figure of postwar Italian art and progenitor of Conceptualism. Curated by Rosalia Pasqualino di Marineo, director of the Piero Manzoni Foundation in Milan, this exhibition focuses on Manzoni’s revolutionary approach to unconventional materials through the works he dubbed ‘Achromes’ — paintings without color. Over 70 Achromes will be on view, comprised of such materials as sewn cloth, cotton balls, fiberglass, synthetic and natural fur, straw, cobalt chloride, polystyrene, stones, and more.
