Through depictions of geologically remote landscapes and familiar elements of the natural world–rendered in richly layered oil paint–Gunderman presents a series of new paintings that abstract the ideas of home, family, love and quantum entanglement. Focusing on the possibility of crustaceous family structures, ‘Mollusk Half-Sisters’ humorously and poetically questions the notion of love and safety, and holds a mirror to our current sociopolitical environment where like-minded divisions have fractured our society into opposing camps. “I wonder whether mollusks and crustaceans aren’t in search of love, a safe home, and to basically be left the hell alone.”
