Ends Jan 28, 2020
ELEVATOR TUESDAYS/ ELEVATOR TALKS is a fluid lecture series designed to adapt to the individual needs and narratives of the artists - some talks will be slide lectures, some will feature video screenings or drawing sessions. Adam de Boer will discuss the winding, transnational path his work has taken him over the past decade. Beginning with a curiosity about his father's childhood in Java, Indonesia, de Boer has taken a long, deep look into his Eurasian ancestry by studying the arts and crafts of the region, their histories and applications. de Boer will explain how and why his current hybrid artworks, which combine styles and materials from Asia, Europe, and America, came to be. Colleen Hargaden will discuss being an artist and teacher, research-creation, and making works that are discursive as well as practical tools. Hargaden will present images and video excerpts of recent works that consider different approaches to future preparedness by leaning on collective knowledge. Investigating various facets of amateur survival culture, from commercial survival kits to Youtube How-to videos, Hargaden explores the various ways humanity is processing unprecedented ecological realities.
