Marcel Alcalá:
A broken heart brought me back to LA, my long awaited home.
In search for truth and comfort in self, I was brought to Tom’s.
A melting point diverse in experience.
Our elders still teach and this place is proof.
Never have I had space to focus on my work, trying new things, a new perspective, a new medium.
My existence erotic to heteronormativity.
In Putas Unidas, my time here in residence, I focused on new mediums, portraiture, and writing about Queer sisterhood. Oils, gouache, and ink, a focus in painting. Editing my screenplay and outlining a future play.
Lost in travels, this experience re-introduced me to the West.
My time here, a transition, grounding a new me.
Writing my first cover interview for Flaunt, modeling for LA Eyeworks, and marinating in the punk works of Tom of Finland.
It has been such a privilege to be a part of Queer histories in this space.
Meeting new artists, spending time with Durk, Sharp, Marc, and everyone at the Foundation.
With so much pleasure I invite you to come join us at my residency presentation of new works, and to see what I see.
Beauty in Queer community.
