Tangled memories: visual works by Alexa Gilweit, scents by The Institute for Art and Olfaction.
11725 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90049
Friday, February 28 at 7:30 PM 9:00 PM
Ends Mar 13, 2020
This is a multimodal exhibition of local artists showcasing Gilweit’s collages and paintings in dialogue with scents created by IAO community members during an exploration of the artistic correlations between collage and scent-making. On the occasion of Tangled memories, Gilweit writes, “Collage is about chance encounters, something on a page that reaches out to you, says something and connects. The way scents are built and shaped is much the same way.... The collages in this show deal with assembled cultural memories. The scents that accompany these pieces bring another layer, a visceral interpretation that is distinct and individual to each designer. They are a reflection of an individual interpretation of an amalgamated American history.” The scents on display were created in July 2019 by Donna Lipowitz, Evans Ward, Bronwyn Atkinson, and Alexa Gilweit as part of the IAO’s Perfume Design Challenge, a scent-making program for the Open Sourcing Smell Culture Initiative. The Eastern Star Gallery is a student-curated contemporary gallery located on the campus of The Archer School for Girls; this show is part of the gallery’s yearlong focus on multi-sensory art. The opening reception will take place February 28th 7:30-9:00pm. Gilweit’s visual works are for sale and a portion of the proceeds will go toward the scholarship fund for The Archer School for Girls. On view through March 13 by appointment.
