In 'The African Lookbook: A Visual History of 100 Years of African Women,' curator and author Catherine E. McKinley draws on her extensive personal collection of historical and contemporary photographs. These images present a visual history spanning a 100-year arc (1870–1970), including what is among the earliest photography on the continent. Featuring works by celebrated African masters, studios of local legend, and anonymous artists, The African Lookbook tells an alternative narrative of African women across centuries that emphasizes their legacy of cosmopolitanism, resistance, style, and fantasy-making. Join McKinley along with American Book Award and MacArthur “Genius Grant” winner Edwidge Danticat as they explore the book and how images were used as a form of sanctuary.
