Lowell Ryan Projects is pleased to present an online exhibition by Korean artist GJ Kimsunken titled Show them life, and they’ll find within themselves. The exhibition consists of 15 oil paintings on canvas in saturated shades of ocher, navy, verdant green, deep purple and black. While abstract in composition and conception the works directly relate to figuration and the spiritual connection between mind and body.

These vertical compositions, ranging in scale from 22 to 48 inches high, begin with a thick smooth application of impasto blanketing the surface of each canvas. Kimsunken meticulously removes sections of the lush surface using a paint scraper, leaving behind both a thin layer of paint against the white gessoed canvas and frequently the accumulated paint on the surface below the gesture. Often geometric in shape, these paintings can be seen to represent aspects of the human form, however for Kimsunken they allude not just to physical characteristics, but what cannot be seen or fully understood—our spirit. Simple in form and universal in approach Kimsunken’s works touch on the uniquely human instinct to understand that which is uncertain, and accept and find ease in that which is unknown.

Born in Seoul, Korea in 1985, GJ Kimsunken received his MFA from The New York Studio School, New York, NY in 2010, and a BFA from the National Art School, Sydney, Australia in 2008. Having attended seminary school at the Chongshin University in Yongin, South Korea, Kimsunken’s practice is deeply rooted in his theological studies and desire to express a space for contemplation.
