Dan Attoe: Dead of Winter II

The Hole
844 N. La Brea Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90038
Jan 21, 6 PM - 8 PM — ends Feb 11, 2023
Known for painting immaculate and haunting miniature oil on canvas works of man and nature, Dan Attoe (b. 1975, Bremerton, WA) has always also maintained active engagement with the medium of neon. Simultaneously flashy like Las Vegas and dirty like a dive bar, neon here is used to juxtapose dream-like imagery with seemingly non-sequitur texts to perplex them. The six works in the show capture that bleak and interminable holding pattern of humanity during the longest nights of the year. Last February in New York where this series debuted, New Yorkers wandered the snowy streets in search of art, but if this cold and wet month has given us any lessons so far, it’s that Angelenos are far from exempt from grey skies and matching moods.
