Steve Turner is pleased to present "The Weight of Water", a solo exhibition by Vienna-based Yuma Radne that features new paintings which are inspired by the memories of her youth spent in Buryatia, a republic in Siberia, that has a significant population of indigenous Mongols to which Radne belongs. She depicts blue nymph-like creatures that inhabit a colorful landscape. Some stand in water, some stand on the land while others ride flying fish. According to Radne: "I grew up in a colorful world. The sky had more than a million colors. Wise people only wore orange and had their beige heads shaved. Yellow, red, blue, and green ribbons adorn the trees on the road leading to the Yanzhima, Goddess of arts, science and wisdom. They are the only colors which contrast with the forest which is largely white and dark-brown. Legend says that Yanzhima came from the sky to the sacred mountain of Barkhan Uula, in the Barguzin Region of Buriad Ulas (Buryatia). Oelun, the mother of the great Ghengis Khan, was born there and so was my father. I used to visit Yanzhima every year, where it is believed that anything you wish for will come true. When I turned thirteen. I asked her to help me become an artist. Mongolian people have a saying, “Under the great blue sky, there are blue Mongol people.” There is a Mongol blue history. There are blue books and blue grass. Not surprisingly, there is a lot of blue in my paintings. I did not see the connection before I left homeland. Only after I left could I recall that blue was everywhere in my memories. When I was nineteen, I made a drawing called The Legend of the Baikal Monster. I just made it up, its existence and its name. I grew up around Lake Baikal, and I never heard of any monsters. However I recently decided to look it up and found out that there are indeed ancient legends of Baikal monsters. That’s when I first realized that I can make paintings that have more knowledge than I have." Yuma Radne (born 2001, Ulaan Ude, Buryatia) has been creating art since she was five years old. After gaining notoriety in Ulaan Ude, she was honored with a solo exhibition at the National Museum of the Republic of Buryatia when she was only seventeen years old. Soon after, she moved to St. Petersburg where she studied for one year at the Shtiglitz Academy of Fine Arts before moving to Austria, where studied in Linz for one year, and then transferred to the Art Academy, Vienna where she is still enrolled. In the fall, she will continue her studies in London at Central Saint Martins. Radne had a previous solo exhibition with Steve Turner (I Am Mad, May 2023) and will soon present works with Steve Turner at Enter, Copenhagen. ____ Steve Turner is pleased to present Everyday Struggle, a solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist David Leggett featuring new paintings that continue the artist’s incorporation of pop culture, text, bright colors and soft materials to explore issues of race and class. The exhibition title comes from a Biggie Smalls song from 1994 that addresses the daily struggles faced by many people in marginalized communities. These circumstances, which often result in poverty, violence and a life without opportunity, are vividly portrayed in the song and alluded to in Leggett’s work, as are the emotions, frustrations and desperation that result from the day-to-day grind. One of Leggett’s paintings amplifies on the theme of Small’s song by combining the spray-painted text, “Everyday Struggle” with a Disney image of Br’er Rabbit fighting the Tar-Baby. In the original Uncle Remus story, Br’er Fox made a doll out of tar and turpentine to trap Br’er Rabbit. The more Br’er Rabbit fights the Tar-Baby, the more entangled he becomes, illustrating the frustration—and often, the futility—of engaging with problematic situations. David Leggett (born 1980) earned a BFA at Savannah College of Art and Design (2003) and an MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2007) before attending Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2010). He has had solo exhibitions at Anthony Gallery, Chicago (2021); Aspect / Ratio, Chicago (2021); Steve Turner, Los Angeles (2020 & 2021); Shane Campbell Gallery, Chicago (2017 & 2019) and his work has been included in group exhibitions at Zidoun & Bossuyt Gallery, Luxembourg; James Fuentes Gallery, New York; Kunstverein Langenhagen, Germany and the Contemporary Art Museum, Raleigh, North Carolina. This is his third solo exhibition at Steve Turner.
