This October, Leiminspace is proud to present “By the House of the Matriarch” a solo exhibition of new works by LA-based painter Rachid Bouhamidi. The exhibition comprises a new series of oil-paintings as well as a small, hand-painted dwelling constructed by the artist. Central to the pieces are Bouhamidi’s tranquil Matriarchs, women in the artist’s life who stand as vessels for strength and solidity. Fields of flat Islamic tessellations disrupt the classically rendered areas and make the works vibrate between pure geometric space and traditional painting. Mexican fan palms, native to this region, sprout up among the pieces, unifying the motifs with their organic radiality. A palette of primaries and earth tones compete with the importance of the figures and warm the pieces like spots of sun shining through the leaves of a luxuriant jungle. With over 20 works, Bouhamidi’s exhibition forms a fronded oasis that fixates on and amplifies the formal characteristics of the Los Angeles landscape.
