Twenty years after his first solo exhibition with Sprüth Magers, John Baldessari will present his second show at the Los Angeles Gallery this October. On view will be twenty-seven works from the artist’s new series of large-scale paintings based on animal icons from the index of common symbols. Created earlier this year, the Emoji paintings continue Baldessari’s long-running investigation of visual and written language, by focussing on the new ways in which we transmit and interpret information. Emojis such as the gecko, tiger, or pig, are juxtaposed with snippets of dialogue from screenplays. The resulting compositions activate humorous and thought-provoking connections between images and text that question the increasingly ambiguous nature of everyday communication in the modern age.The exhibition is Courtesy Marian Goodman Gallery. For further information and press enquiries, contact Silvia Baltschun (
