Copresented with Otis College of Art and Design. Artist Shirin Neshat’s Looking for Oum Kulthum is a visually dazzling film-within-a-film about an Iranian artist-filmmaker who attempts to make a film about her hero, the legendary female Arab singer Oum Kulthum. Neshat’s heroine, Mitra, struggles as she dares to cross lines in a conservative, male-dominated society–reflecting the obstacles faced by Neshat and Kulthum themselves. (2017, dir. Shirin Neshat, English, Arabic, Farsi, with English subtitles, 90 min.) Q&A with the director follows.
