Nino Mier Gallery is pleased to announce its first solo exhibition with Los Angeles-based artist Jake Longstreth. Presented in two parts, Brick & Mortar / Seven Trees explores two major themes of Longstreth’s work. His architectural scenes for Brick & Mortar depict the ubiquitous commercial hubs that proliferated the United States in the 1990s. Today, these familiar beige structures still stand in the era of online retail, but for how long? In Seven Trees, Longstreth depicts trees and landscapes distinct to Southern California, all illuminated through the region’s characteristic smoggy atmosphere. Both themes, taken together, demonstrate Longstreth’s interest in the broad cultural and economic forces shaping our world. ----- Nino Mier Gallery is pleased to present the first exhibition of American Indian artist Raven Halfmoon. Halfmoon creates powerful, often large-scale ceramic sculptures that speak to the artist’s identity as both a citizen of the Caddo Nation and a woman. The Caddo people are renowned for ceramics, with this in mind, Halfmoon utilizes the medium as a way to interpret, understand and fight for Caddo people’s place in today’s society. Continuing a legacy of craft and clay, Halfmoon also secures her place within that tradition and cultural history. By excavating her past, as well as the history of her tribe, Halfmoon addresses the ever-relevant, but often forgotten, story of “the other,” but also the provocative questions of cultural appropriation that haunt contemporary society.
