You are invited to witness Corpus Sonos by Amy Kingsmill and Justin Snyder, a visceral performance combining the disciplines of musical improvisation and body ritual. This is the third iteration of this work and the first time the duet has been performed in Los
Angeles, having previously been performed in 2014 at Panopoly Lab, New York, and in 2013 at Mori and Stein Gallery, London. Both Kingsmill and Snyder are both accomplished performers, Kingsmill coming to LA for this performance from London, England after having performed recently at Karachi's first Art Biennale and Tempting Failure's Biennale of Performance Art and Noise; and Snyder traveling from Detroit, recently having performed at The Kennedy Center and the Shanghai Concert Hall. Corpus Sonos is a performance work that merges sound and movement as one intertwined experience. This transformative piece joins the two performers and creates one instrument of flesh and sound. Lying on the floor, Kingsmill is attached by meat hooks which pierce her flesh and are connected by ropes that lead directly to the sound source of the toy piano. The performance is entirely improvised physically and sonically, commencing with a trance-like single note on the toy piano that transpires into a duet in which Kingsmill's movements are an
embodied response to Snyder's playing and vice versa. The demarcation between leader and follower is blurred as each flows from one state of mind through a process of complicit trust and a physical and auditory push and pull. The choreography and sound experience are constantly in flux, inviting the audience surrounding the performers into a ritual that is completely different each time.
