Level Ground Festival Presents Khat-e Penhan / Hidden Line is a surrealist film and multimedia installation created by Gazelle Samizay. Exploring familial history, cultural expectations, and gender norms, Gazelle’s work examines how the repression of events passes between generations as an unspoken trauma. Gazelle first became aware of this impulse as a young, Afghan American woman in a post 9/11 landscape. As divisions between non-Muslim Americans and Muslims has deepened, her work provides a counter depiction of Afghanistan, her birthplace, and gives people the opportunity to reconnect to a shared humanity.
