Artist Ellen Lesperance has a practice rooted in the long-honored traditions of feminist environmental activism and the Pattern and Decoration (P&D) movement. Lesperance uses the patterns of items of clothing worn in protest scenarios as the templates for her careful paintings. Over the past decade, she has traveled to the United Kingdom to research the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp, compiling images of women’s protest knitwear. Her archive has now grown to approximately 100 images reflecting a collection of symbols of protest, some of which can be connected to the Pattern and Decoration movement. Lesperance will speak about her work as it is inspired by P&D and other movements, such as Creative Direct Action, and debut a new artist’s book featuring her archive of protest knitwear.
