David Kordansky Gallery presents an online screening of Will Boone's first long-form video, Sweet Perfume (2019). The video will be available to stream all weekend on the gallery's Vimeo channel. Access to on-demand viewing will run from Saturday, May 2, 12:00 am PT through Sunday, May 3, 11:59 pm PT.
Filmed over the course of a year between Houston, Texas, and Los Angeles, California, Sweet Perfume is at once a self-portrait of the artist and a portrait of the geographical region between these disparate places, connected by 1,500 miles of highway on Interstate 10. Inspired in part by fan fiction, Boone's video tells the alternative story of Leatherface, a character lifted from the 1974 cult-classic movie The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. A loosely-woven narrative follows the now chainsaw-less monster who leaves Los Angeles and returns to Texas in a stolen truck, seeking a reckoning with the past.
Sweet Perfume debuted at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, where it was installed as part of The Highway Hex (2019), Boone's first museum solo exhibition. The video was written, directed, scored, and produced by the artist, and features a small cast of friends and contributors including his wife, Stephanie Boone, and the artist Terry Allen. Collaborative in its approach, Sweet Perfume contemplates the overlapping mythologies of specific places, and in many ways, how our past carries into the present.
