One-on-One: Jennifer Guidi, An Endless Reflection of Your Beautiful Energy (White #2 PT, Black Sand SF #2E, Multicolor, Black Ground) is the gallery's fifth in a series of Online Viewing Room exhibitions dedicated to a single artwork. One-on-One presentations utilize enhanced editorial content to provide an in-depth look at artists' practices and specific objects in their oeuvres. These exhibitions include statements from the artists, art-historical and cultural references, sound and video media that enrich the experience of viewing the work, as well as suggestions for further exploration.
Guidi's sand mandalas emanate energy: they appear to be in constant motion, capturing both the subtlety and explosive power of natural phenomena like water, light, and flora. An Endless Reflection of Your Beautiful Energy (White #2 PT, Black Sand SF #2E, Multicolor, Black Ground) (2020) incorporates 24 colors—many more than Guidi has used in any previous painting of this kind—against a black background. The painting’s palette and shimmering action are in part a response to the immersive luminosity of Monet’s Water Lilies. Directly reflecting upon formative experiences looking at the Water Lilies over many years, Guidi selected colors found in one of the eight panoramic panels installed, according to Monet’s specifications, at Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris. Dispersing the colors in an intuitive way that nonetheless evokes the presence of an organic system, and accentuating every color-filled indentation with a further hue, she creates a sense of physical vibration and visual movement that bursts with life—seen, unseen, and otherwise.
