Data research is often perceived as fact, where the findings are presented as universal and fixed, rather than subjective and fluid. When conducting research about art and artists, the two subjects are by nature amorphous and difficult to define. How can we include a multiplicity of perspectives in the analysis process? How can we acknowledge the inherent bias in our viewpoints? How do we allow for nuance? Contradiction? Imperfection? Possibility? Softness? Humanity?
This zoom discussion invites artists and attendees to look at and collectively interpret data gathered by the Los Angeles Artist Census.
Data will be presented through interactive visualizations that cover topics proposed by the WCCW, related to potential disparities experienced by local artists as they relate to gender, race, ability, and queerness.
This conversation is an experiment in collective data interpretation, informed by feminist research practices.
No experience necessary!
This discussion will be facilitated by artist Rachel Yezbick.
