To celebrate Senga Nengudi’s current exhibition at Sprüth Magers, Los Angeles, join us for a two-part virtual event on Thursday, December 10 and Friday, December 11. On Thursday, December 10, between 11AM and 9PM PST, view Barbara McCullough’s groundbreaking film 'Shopping Bag Spirits and Freeway Fetishes: Reflections on Ritual Space' (1981, 60 min.), an experimental exploration of the importance of ritual and ceremony in the lives and work of African American creators. McCullough captures Senga Nengudi’s performance 'Ceremony for Freeway Fets' (1978) along with works and words by David Hammons and Betye Saar, among others. A web address and password to access the film will be provided in advance to all those who RSVP to rsvp.la@spruethmagers.com. Screening courtesy Barbara McCullough and Third World Newsreel. On Friday, December 11 at 11AM PST, attend a live conversation between Senga Nengudi, Barbara McCullough and Naima J. Keith, LACMA’s Vice President of Education and Public Programs, over Zoom. This event will open with a rare broadcast of Nengudi’s 1988 radio work, “Double Think Bulemia: Mouth to Mouth, Conversations on Being,” which features the voices of past collaborators and fellow Black artists as they discuss the nature of creativity. A conversation around Nengudi and McCullough’s past collaborations and the collaborative process in general, moderated by Keith, will follow.
