So Excited: Bianca Fields, Auriea Harvey, Charlie Mai and Brittany Tucker (pictured) Steve Turner is pleased to present So Excited, a group exhibition curated by Brittany Tucker that considers art-making as a form of hacking. It features two and three-dimensional works by four American artists–Bianca Fields, Auriea Harvey, Charlie Mai and Brittany Tucker. A hacker is primarily thought to be someone who gains access to a computer system illegally in order to disrupt, destroy or steal. However, there is a lesser known definition of a hacker–someone who is immersed in the programming subculture and who spends their time to creatively solve technical computing problems. This is the definition that inspired this exhibition. Each of the participating artists takes an already established visual language and uses technical and creative skills to address complicated political histories and underrepresentation. “Hacking” also describes the challenge of making physical art in a digital age. By assigning a digital-age term to the age-old challenge of making relevant art, Tucker seeks to bridge a gap and plant new seeds. Bianca Fields (b. 1995, Cleveland) earned a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art (2019). She has had a solo exhibition at Dragon Crab and Turtle Gallery, St. Louis (2021) and has had work exhibited at Ruttkowski68, Paris (2020) and Bellevue Art Museum, Seattle (2019). She will next present works at The Armory Show, New York (September 2021) with Steve Turner. She lives and works in Kansas City, Missouri. Auriea Harvey (b. 1971, Indianapolis) is a pioneering net artist and videogame designer who was based in Ghent for twenty years before moving to Rome in 2019 where she now lives and works. Her recent works blend digital and handmade production, examples of which were presented in her first solo exhibition at bitforms gallery, New York (2021). Harvey has also presented works at MEET Digital Culture Center, Milan; Transfer Gallery, Los Angeles; Telematic Media Arts, San Francisco and one of her digital sculptures recently sold at Christie’s curated NFT auction. Charlie Mai (b. 1995, Arlington, Virginia) received a BA at Bard College (2018) and since graduating has developed his practice with focus on sculpture and performance. His work has been exhibited at Allouche Gallery, New York (2019) and DecameronTV (2020). He lives and works in Bogota. Brittany Tucker (b. 1996, Brooklyn) received a BA at Bard College (2018). She has had solo exhibitions at Steve Turner, Los Angeles (2019 & 2020) and SPRING/BREAK, New York (2019, presented by Four-D Projects). Tucker has also presented works at September Gallery, Hudson, New York (2021) and at D.W.D.S Bregenz, Austria (2021). She will next present works at The Armory Show, New York (September 2021) with Steve Turner. She lives and works in Vienna. -------------- David Leggett: We Got Food At Home Steve Turner is pleased to present We Got Food At Home, a solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based David Leggett which features recent paintings that continue his use of pop culture imagery, bright colors and soft materials to prompt discussion on topics such as race and class that are often difficult to confront. He combines text composed of letters cut from felt with cartoon images to invite viewers in so that they might take a closer look and ask serious questions. According to Leggett, “I leave things open so as not to pick a side. Other artists that make political work often want to convince the viewer of their view. I have no interest in that.” David Leggett (born 1980) earned a BFA at Savannah College of Art and Design (2003) and an MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2007) before attending Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2010). He has had solo exhibitions at Aspect / Ratio, Chicago (2021); Steve Turner, Los Angeles (2020); Shane Campbell Gallery, Chicago (2017 & 2019) and his work has been included in group exhibitions at Zidoun & Bossuyt Gallery, Luxembourg; James Fuentes Gallery, New York; Kunstverein Langenhagen, Germany and the Contemporary Art Museum, Raleigh, North Carolina. This is his second exhibition at Steve Turner, Los Angeles. He will next present work at The Armory Show, New York with Steve Turner. ----------- Richard Ayodeji Ikhide: MythMaking Steve Turner is pleased to present MythMaking, a solo exhibition by London-based Richard Ayodeji Ikhide featuring paintings that are inspired by his Nigerian heritage and his desire to record the images of his subconscious. He conflates memory, family history and cultural iconography to create images that have a figurative core but are completed with colorful abstract gestures and patterns. According to Ikhide, the works in MythMaking represent his desire to make coherent his inner psychic reality, and as that is a murky and mystical endeavor, the works inevitably are comprised of abstract gestures and marks. Richard Ayodeji Ikhide (b. 1991, Nigeria,) earned a BA in textile design at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts, London (2014) and Postgraduate Diploma at The Royal Drawing School, London (2017). He has had solo exhibitions at the Zabludowicz Collection, London (2019) and V.O. Curations, London (2021). MythMaking is his second solo exhibition at Steve Turner.
