Gallerist and curator Karla Funderburk is pleased to announce an Artist Talk and Closing Reception of the current exhibition “Intangible Matter” by local artist Alissa Warshaw. Alissa will be sharing the story of her roots, inspirations, what drives her to continue creating, and the materials she is drawn to. In addition, there will be a sneak peek into her process of drawing as meditation through a demonstration of the technique she is developing with which to find your voice through mark-making. Attendees will be given an opportunity to participate in an exercise connecting brain and hand in analog fashion. Alissa Warshaw, an artist currently based in Los Angeles, was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. After completing her BFA at Parsons School of Design in NYC, she spent many years working in a variety of mediums, always coming back to the line as a basis of structure. Alissa's work is informed by a deep resonance of natural mystery…the shimmering metallic blues and grays of Puget Sound, the patterns, colors and textures, the never-ending ebb and flow of the tides all represent home for her. These works are moments - filtering, imagining and encompassing grief and loss, yet always reminding us of light and joy. It acknowledges that home lies in our hearts. This body of work grew out of a desire to process the challenges of the last 2 years, and Alissa is pleased to be showing at Matter Studio Gallery in her first Los Angeles solo exhibition. Combining her love of paper and ink, she includes flower essences and metallic watercolors in the mix, allowing them to act as a subtle yet integral part of creation and ritual. Also included are a few encaustic and 3- D pieces. Warshaw's art has been shown in many group exhibitions both in NYC and LA, along with participating in several Brewery Artwalk events at her studio, each one highlighting the exploration of a different medium. Her work is held in a number of private collections.
