What does it mean to interact with another human? If you bump into a stranger on the street and say “excuse me”, what is that? A fleeting, unexpected physical interaction. A split-second of eye contact to make sure the action wasn’t malicious. The shy laugh that comes when an accident is accepted as just that. Every exchange of energy, every stare, every hug, every acknowledgment, has the potential to give us what we ultimately crave — connection.
Okay, maybe the scenario above is a lot for getting shoulder-checked on the sidewalk, but you get what I mean. If there’s one thing we can agree on after the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s that humans need connection. Not just to each other, but the world around us.
Inspired by performance artist Marina Abramovic’s The Artist Is Present (2010), Katrina Davis will perform 50+ minutes of stand up comedy derived entirely from the feelings, thoughts and experiences absorbed from 50 volunteers for a one-of-a-kind comedic experience. At The Comic Is Present, each attendee will have the opportunity to spend 60-seconds engaging with Katrina in however way they see fit, safely from across the table. She will not speak, but will be completely engaged and open to connect with them for that minute. At the end of the hour-long connection portion of the show, comedy will commence in a more traditional format for the audience to enjoy.
