Linda Smith’s first-ever survey exhibition spans five decades (1980-2022), comprising paintings, serigraphs, mosaics, and her signature hand-built ceramic pieces, including new 6-foot-tall totems. The power in Smith’s work is her affirmation of life and the feminine spirit. The pattern, her orchestration of colors, marks, and shapes as a basis for figural pieces. Focusing on ceramics since the mid-1990s, Smith’s practice remains deeply connected to painterly tradition. She says, “I’m a painter in my approach to sculpture. I paint with underglaze, glaze on simple shapes, and hand-build with slabs. I fire to bisque and paint with commercial glazes before high fire.” Pictured: “Self Portrait #2,” mosaic (1999) “B&W Cat #1,” ceramic sculpture (2016)
