Join Benjamin Lowder, curator David Orr, and L.A. Weekly Art Editor Shana Nys Dambrot as they discuss architecture, philosophy, and mysticism. Splendor and Formation is an exhibition of new works by artist Benjamin Lowder, on view in PRS’ Hansell Gallery from 11/5/22 to 2/25/23. The works in Splendor and Formation are a continuation of Lowder’s Myth, Math & Magic series of artwork. Lowder’s process literally deconstructs language; he will often use vintage advertising signage as a source when creating work that breaks the spell of marketing and points toward the transcendent. This exhibition at the Philosophical Research Society is especially meaningful to Lowder, whose practice is influenced by Manly Hall: “With these new works, I am giving particular emphasis to the inspiration I have drawn from Manly Palmer Hall’s scholarship. I often listen to his lectures while working in the studio, especially his rendition of the Sefer Yetzirah also known as the ‘Book of Formation.’ The Sefer Yetzirah describes the specific way in which language, through the power of the “Word,” sparks the formation of material existence.” Lowder says. Another influence on Lowder’s highly geometric work is legendary designer, inventor, philosopher, and futurist R. Buckminster Fuller (Lowder is the center director at the Fuller Dome at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, and a board member of the R.Buckminster Fuller Dome Home at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale).
