Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, whose new series of portraits of Black Angelenos is wheat-pasted across CAAM’s monumental atrium walls, discusses this new project in Los Angeles with actress, producer, and screenwriter Lena Waithe. Fazlalizadeh’s social practice is rooted in Black feminism. She is especially known for her 2012 public art series Stop Telling Women to Smile, in which she took on gender-based street harassment, confronting the vernacular of the catcall via direct, unwavering, closed-lip portraits of women in Brooklyn.
