In these new works by NY based artist Clare Brew, there is a poetical intersection between two mediums, the humble framing of plywood and the neon light. Clare’s career of 30 years working in the trades has allowed her develop a vocabulary of the hidden workings behind the wall. She trained as an electrician after studying at Edinburgh Art College, she then became a neon technician and has never left working in the field, though has worked independently as a conservator of electrical artworks. The eight editions : Moon Age, Break it Sundown, Barcelona, Sahara, Space Lemon, Flair, Palm Springs, Week in Provence - are wall assemblages of painted plywood and neon line. ‘I like to see all the elements exposed as they are always in my vision, like working inside out on a dress-making pattern’. From an early age Clare has been interested in taking things apart. Her forms and rebuilding of spaces are instinctive and often called carefully curated gestures, the works are often left to evolve over time. At 53 years old and living in both New York and London she finds inspiration in travel, antiques markets, and tools. Shrine celebrates the freedom found when you look under the rock and see a great light source.
