MODEST common is proud to present the opening of Eat With Your Entire Mouth by Olivia Alonso Gough. The artist’s first solo show in Los Angeles features 23 photographic portraits.
Over the span of the last 2 years, Alonso Gough composed these portraits of friends and acquaintances, traveling around the country to photograph them in their homes and their haunts. The physical environments, mostly interiors, resonate within the portraits, each frame granting a window into a life.
In the artist’s words, “A person is made of a million things, and that includes the marks on their face and the flecks in their eyes, but also the marks and flecks on their clothes and on their walls—a person is everything that they’ve done and everything that’s happened to them. I try to show as much of a person as I can when I photograph them, so I can do justice to how big of a deal each of them is—how far into each of them you could possibly go if you had the time and they let you.”
Eat with Your Entire Mouth will open on Saturday, August 5th at Modest Common.
Olivia Alonso Gough makes work that considers the interior, the ineffable, and the space where intimacy dwells. Their artwork primarily takes the form of photography, video and installation. In recent works, they create empathetic portraits and still lifes that center queer experiences. Olivia holds an MFA from the school of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA from Syracuse University.
