Composition is the title of a 1967 photostat work by Joseph Kosuth, where the definition of the word “composition” is taken from a standard dictionary, photographically enlarged, printed and mounted to an aluminum framework, and ultimately hung on the wall like any other work of art. Its subject matter simultaneously proclaims and manifests one of the foundations of painting since Classical antiquity. This exhibition is about looking at artwork from the 16th Century through today, and perceiving their composition as well as their general approach toward figurative and abstract representation. Rarely are works of art from a nearly 500-year span seen together, in close proximity, through the lens of history, in a gallery setting.
