Join us for a conversation and workshop with Nyambo Anuluoha, designer and owner of the oldest African-print clothing store in Los Angeles: KUTULA by Africana (formerly Africana Imports). KUTULA created the crowns and headpieces for artist and abolitionist Patrisse Cullors’ costume in her installation Free Us, part of the exhibition The House Was Too Small: Yoruba Sacred Arts from Africa and Beyond. Anuluoha will discuss her creative process for the headpieces on view, and the historical and cultural significance of crowns and head wraps, highlighting the opulence and beauty of different styles from across the Continent and the diaspora. Attendees are welcome to bring a wrap or cloth for the head-wrapping workshop in the second half of the program! About the Designer KUTULA BY Africana is LA’s premiere retailer for African-inspired fashions, designing and producing contemporary fashions since 1971. Their flagship store in LA’s View Park-Windsor Hillsneighborhood is a cultural destination for African fashion and also serves as a design showroom for African-inspired fashions serving costume and set designers, stylists, celebrities, dignitaries and leaders across various sectors. Co-owners and sisters Bo and Kay Anuluoha born and raised in LA with parental roots in Nigerian and Zambia. KUTULA’s legacy includes costumes for Marvel’s Black Panther film, Kendrick Lamar’s All the Stars music video,, and red-carpet designs for Lupita N’yongo, Michael B. Jordan, and Angela Bassett, among many others. KUTULA recently worked alongside Beyoncé Knowles-Carter on the Emmy-winning costume team for her 2020 musical film, Black Is King.
