Over Drinks! Cocktail Reception: Dec 7, 2023 Celebration, memorialization, friendship, commiseration, promises, dissolution, pomp, escapism, and, maybe most of all, social revelry, are some of the many energies exchanged over drinks. Having drinks alongside life’s events, important, looming, or seemingly insignificant, is a ubiquitous practice in many places around the globe. Gathering socially over a shared beverage has been a function of societies since the pre-written word. Over Drinks! explores the ways we gather, relate, and celebrate as social beings, painting in myriad colors, the breadth, nuance, flavor, and tone of such gatherings. The art salon is no stranger to these moments. From ancient Greek tributes to Bacchus to the rich, slovenly bar scenes of Caravaggio, from the leisure-loving boaters of Renoir and the looming presence of the Green Fairy to the effervescent bottles found in Monika Baer’s ethereal void, consumption is no stranger to muse (or vice of muse, at that). There is an immense depth to a practice that is daily, fleeting, spontaneous, and omnipresent. Plans have been forged, and love affairs consummated.
